Notice of Election of Registered Medical Practitioners for Appointment to Medical Council

Notice is hereby given that, in accordance with the provisions of section 17(1) and (8) of the Medical Practitioners Act 2007, an election is about to be held.

The Medical Council is the regulatory body for doctors. It has a statutory role in protecting the public by promoting the highest professional standards amongst doctors practicing in the Republic of Ireland. The Council has a majority of non-medical members. The 25 member Council consists of 13 non-medical members and 12 medical members.

The Returning Officer, hereby requests nominations from registered medical practitioner practising medicine in the State, on the Register of Medical Practitioners, held by the Medical Council on the 15th February 2018, who may wish to stand for election for appointment to the Medical Council.

Eligibility for election for appointment to the Council of the Medical Council

To be eligible for election a person must be a registered medical practitioner practising medicine in the State (but excluding any visiting EEA practitioner) on 15th February 2018, this being the day preceding the last day for receiving nominations.

Nomination of a candidate shall be subscribed by 10 other registered medical practitioners.

Candidates nominated should demonstrate relevant experience or skills in at least one of the following areas: corporate governance, risk management, strategy development, change management, regulation, and health sector knowledge.

They should also show effective judgement, have effective communication skills, and be improvement focused.

Nomination papers should be returned to the Offices of the Medical Council, Kingram House, Kingram Place, Dublin 2, D02 XY88. The Returning Officer will attend at the offices of the Medical Council (at the above address) to receive nomination papers on 16th February, 2018 between the hours of 10.00am and 1.00pm.

Every nomination paper delivered to the Returning Officer (at the above address) before the commencement of the above hours shall be retained and produced by the Returning Officer, and be deemed to have been validly delivered at the beginning of these hours.

If there is more than one nominated candidate an electronic poll shall be taken, the period during which votes may be received by the Returning Officer will commence at 12 noon on Thursday 1st March and close at 12 noon on Thursday 21st March 2018. The non-medical vacancies arising on the Medical Council this summer will be advertised on by the Public Appointments Service in the coming weeks. Prospective nominees should be aware of the time commitment that must be given to the role of Council members, all of whom will be appointed by the Minister for Health.
