Mary Duff

Nominated by: Minister for Health 

Mary is a registered nurse and midwife and holds a Masters (Hons) in Business Administration, Healthcare Management, UCD. She undertook her nurse training in Jervis St and National Maternity Hospitals and her clinical background is in Intensive Care nursing, Coronary Care and General Medicine. During her career she has held ward manager and senior nurse manager’s positions in acute and community care hospitals most of which was in the North East where she is from. Mary was one of the first Adjunct Associate Professors of Nursing to be appointed by UCD, in December 2010.

She has over twenty two years’ experience as a Director of Nursing, having worked in Drogheda Community Services, Louth County Hospital, Dundalk, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda and currently she is the Director of Nursing in St Vincent’s University Hospital, Elm Park, Dublin since 2006. She is an Executive Member of the St Vincent’s Healthcare Group Board of Directors and she takes a very active and participative and leadership role at corporate level within the organization.

She has participated on many National Strategic Groups such as:

  • Review of Undergraduate Nursing & Midwifery Degree Programmes
  • Post Graduate Education Review Group
  • DoH Nursing KPI steering group
  • Commission on Patient Safety and Quality Assurance

She is currently a member of the HSE, Quality & Patient Safety Directorate, Clinical Governance Development Working Group, Standards for Safer Better Healthcare - Acute Care Collaboration and Joint HSE/Forum Steering Group: Clinical Programmes and Clinical directors. She led the successful preparation for the Joint Commission International (JCI) 2nd formal assessment of St Vincent’s University Hospital (SVUH) in March this year. SVUH is the only public hospital accredited by JCI.

Over the years Mary has gained significant expertise in change management through leading the development and implementation of many innovative services and educational programmes. She is a committed nurse and leader.
