Mr Fergus Clancy
Fergus Clancy is Executive Chairman of the Mater Private Group. In his early career he specialised in medical malpractice, quality and patient safety. He became advisor to the Department of Health and to most of Ireland’s major hospitals, particularly in matters of corporate and clinical governance.
Fergus has lectured extensively including on the first post-graduate course in healthcare risk management in Ireland, offered by University College Dublin.
When his consulting firm was bought by insurance giant Aon in 2004, Fergus joined the Mater Private to succeed the then CEO. Since taking over the group Fergus has overseen the transformation of the Mater Private from being a single hospital to being Ireland’s most progressive private healthcare group, incorporating two hospitals, two public/private cancer centres (including the Group’s first UK venture), and a number of outreach facilities.
Fergus was the first hospital CEO to be appointed Chairman of the Independent Hospitals Association of Ireland, a position he held until 2012. Fergus was appointed by the Minister for Health to the Commission on Quality and Patient Safety Implementation Group in 2010. Following completion of its work Fergus became, and remains, the private hospital representative on the National Patient Safety Advisory Group. This group, which comprises the most senior executives from the public health service and the regulatory bodies, exists to advise the Minister on matters relating to governance and patient safety.
Fergus was also appointed to the HIQA Advisory Group in the development of the National Standards for Safer, Better Healthcare (2012).
In early 2015 Fergus was asked to participate in a high-level working group within the Department of Health to advise on the legislation that will be required to introduce a licensing regime for all Irish hospitals.
Fergus has recently completed two three-year terms as a non-executive director of one of Ireland’s largest insurance company. He is non-executive director of i360 Medical. This is a MedTech IP development and commercialisation company backed by, among others, the Irish Government and the Cleveland Clinic.
