Prof Alan Johnson, BSc, PhD, FRCSI (Hon)
Ministerial Nominee
The major focus of my career has been undergraduate medical education and training and research. Following completion of a PhD in Biochemistry in 1970 in the University of Dublin, Trinity College, my career initially followed a traditional academic path with an emphasis on teaching and research. I moved to the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in 1975 where I remained up to my retirement in 2010.
From 1988 I devoted an increasing amount of time to the administration and management of the academic affairs of RCSI. I played a substantial role in the national and international affairs of the College including being a member of the Health Research Board (1992 -1997) and Medical Council (1998-2003). From 1998-2006 I held the position of Dean of the Medical Faculty which with the establishment of the Schools of Physiotherapy, Nursing and Pharmacy evolved into the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. From 2006 up to my retirement I was the Director of the newly established Graduate Entry Programme in Medicine.
Since my retirement I have given some time to working with the Education and Training Section of the Council in the areas of accreditation and standards.
