Entry Requirements

There may be additional entry requirements for international applicants. This is explained in each medical school’s prospectus, available on their websites. Below is a summary of the requirements for the medical schools in Ireland.

National University of Ireland, Galway

EU Residents:

  • Submit application via CAO, the closing date for 2017 applications is February 1st
  • Minimum Points Requirement:480 points from the same sitting of the Leaving Certificate Examination (or equivalent)
  • Aptitude Test Completion of the required Admissions Test (HPAT-Ireland),the closing date for 2017 applications is January 20th
  • Minimum A-Level Grades: A*A*A (A-Level)& C(AS) or equivalent combination plus HPAT-Ireland test results 
  • 720 - the minimum combined CAO and HPAT score in 2017
  • Students must satisfy the Garda/Police vetting and Medical Clearance requirements

Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland

EU Residents

  • Submit application via CAO, the closing date for 2017 applications is February 1st
  • Entry to the five/six year Medical programme must include the following: Irish (OD3) English (OD3) Maths (OD3) a foreign language (OD3) a lab science (Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Physics/Chemistry or Agricultural Science) (OD3) and HPAT. CAO applicants presenting the minimum subjects listed above with Chemistry and another lab science (HB3 in one of the sciences or Maths) enter the five year Medical programme.
  • Applicants must register for the HPAT-Ireland admission test by 20th January of the year of admission. To be eligible to sit HPAT-Ireland, candidates must be in their final year of school or have completed their Leaving Certificate (or another EU secondary school exit examination) prior to the year of admission.
  • Before registering for the HPAT exam, candidates must complete their CAO application, as the CAO application number is required to register for HPAT-Ireland. The 2017 HPAT exam takes place on 25th February 2017. Visit the HPAT Ireland website for more details.
  • 724- the minimum combined CAO and HPAT score in 2017 (minimum Leaving Certificate points 520 and minimum HPAT points 155 for RCSI)

  • Submit application via CAO, the closing date for 2017 applications is February 1st

Trinity College Dublin

EU Residents

  • Applicants must achieve a minimum of 480 points and meet the minimum entry and course specific requirements in the same sitting* of the Leaving Certificate examination. In addition, all applicants will be required to sit the admissions test (HPAT - Ireland) which is scheduled for 25 February 2017.
  • Applicants must register for the test at www.hpat-ireland.acer.edu.au by 20 January 2017.
  • 731 points – the minimum combined CAO and HPAT score in 2017
  • Students must satisfy the Garda/Police vetting and Medical Clearance requirements

Non EU Residents

University College Cork

EU Residents

  • Submit application via CAO, the closing date for 2017 applications is February 1st
  • 2017 Entry Requirements: H4 in Chemistry and in either Physics or Biology; O6/H7 required in Irish, English, another language and Mathematics. Changes to the HPAT scoring system: Scores above 550 will be rounded to the nearest 5 points and moderated e.g. a score of 562 will be rounded to 560 and will result in a moderated score of 552.
  • Students presenting with a 2016 (or previous) Leaving Certificate must present with a HC2 in Chemistry and either Physics or Biology.
  • Aptitude test completion of the required Admissions Test (HPAT-Ireland), the closing date for 2017 applications is January 20th
  • 726- minimum combined CAO and HPAT score in 2016
  • Students must satisfy the Garda/Police vetting and Medical Clearance requirements
  • Students whose mother tongue is not English must provide evidence of English Language ability

University College Dublin

EU residents

  • Minimum of 480 Leaving Certificate points and meet the subject requirements for matriculation in the same sitting of the Leaving Certificate or equivalent
  • Aptitude Test Completion of the required Admissions Test (HPAT-Ireland), the closing date for 2017 applications is January 20th
  • 730- the minimum combined CAO and HPAT score in 2017
  • For entry into the UCD medical programme passes in six subjects including English, Irish, a third language, Mathematics, one laboratory science subject & one other recognised subject is required. You must obtain a minimum of Grade H5 in two subjects and a minimum of Grade O6/H7 in the remaining 4 subjects.
  • All applicants are required to demonstrate a high level of competence in the English language. Applicants who have not passed English as a subject in the Irish Leaving Certificate Examination must provide evidence of equivalent competence in English language through their school leaving examination or matriculation examination or by achieving the minimum standard in a recognised English language test

Non- EU Residents

  • Applicants who have not passed English as a subject in the Irish Leaving Certificate Examination must provide evidence of equivalent competence in English language through their school leaving examination or matriculation examination or by achieving the minimum standard in a recognised English language test
