Anaesthesia is an acute medical specialty, which combines an in-depth understanding of applied physiology and pharmacology with the need to be practically adept. The use of local anaesthetic techniques including epidurals, spinals and other nerve blocks is now widespread in anaesthetic practice. As intra-operative care includes continual observation and monitoring of the patients, attention to detail is important, and anaesthetists must have an ability to respond appropriately to sudden changes.
