Medical Council approves proposals for the granting of 'Certificates of Experience' for Intern year training

20th October 2009

The Medical Council has approved proposals for the granting of 'Certificates of Experience' for Intern year training.

The five Medical Schools that have graduating students this year will continue to provide a 'Certificate of Experience' to Interns for the training period of July 2009 to July 2010.  However, in addition to the Dean's sign-off on training, evidence of quality control by local clinical supervisors/ intern tutors will also be required as part of the criteria for satisfactory completion of Intern training.

The duration and content of internship training will continue as per the current process under the Medical Practitioners Act 1978 pending a review under the quality assurance parameters approved by Council.  Interns are advised to contact their Intern Tutor or Dean's Office of their Medical School if they are uncertain about this process or have any queries.

The Medical Council expects that the quality assurance of intern training programmes will ensure that Interns achieve the required professional and personal skills which will result in good patient care and an excellent foundation for further postgraduate training.
