Medical Council Elections 2018

The current Medical Council commenced its term in June 2013 with the aim of building on the work of the previous Council, in promoting patient safety, while engaging proactively with the profession. The Council consists of 25 members including both elected and appointed members. In addition to the Council itself, there are a number of Committees, Sub-Committees and Working Groups which report to the Council. Each Council term lasts for five years meaning that this current Councils term will end in May 2018.

Six of the 25 members are appointed following the election process under the following categories:

  • One medical practitioner registered or able to be registered in the Specialist Division in relation to Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • One medical practitioner registered or able to be registered in the Specialist Division in relation to Anaesthesia
  • One medical practitioner registered or able to be registered in the Specialist Division in relation to Public health Medicine
  • One medical practitioner registered or able to be registered in the Specialist Division in relation to Pathology or Radiology
  • One registered medical practitioner, practising medicine in a hospital but not a consultant
  • One registered medical practitioner who does not fall into the categories above

In addition to the 6 elected members, the Medical Council comprises of a further 19 nominated members under the following categories:

  • one nominee of the Royal Irish Academy
  • two nominees of the HSE
  • one nominee of the Minister for Education and Science
  • one nominee of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland 
  • one nominee of CORU
  • one nominee of HIQA
  • two nominees of medical schools
  • one nominee of the Independent Hospitals Association of Ireland
  • five nominees of the Minister for Health
  • one registered medical practitioner nominated by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland
  • one registered medical practitioner nominated by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland
  • one registered medical practitioner nominated by the Irish College of General Practitioners
  • one registered medical practitioner nominated the College of Psychiatry
