Intern Year

The Intern Year is recognised as the first year of postgraduate medical training. The Medical Council expects that Interns will develop the professional and personal skills throughout this period of training that will result in good patient care and an excellent foundation for further postgraduate training.

The Medical Practitioners Act 2007 sets out specific responsibilities for the Medical Council in relation to the Intern Year, which includes;

  • specifying the number of intern training posts it approves
  • issuing guidelines on medical education and training for interns
  • specifying the standards that will be required for the granting of a certificate of experience for intern training
  • inspecting clinical training sites
  • confirming that all doctors on the trainee specialist division of the register must be in a numbered, identifiable approved training post
  • approving the training programme and the body that delivers that training.
