Professional Competence

For the first time, doctors working in Ireland will be required to participate in Continuous Professional Development and demonstrate to Council that they are maintaining their standards of professional competence in their practice. Once commenced, Part 11 of the Medical Practitioners Act, 2007 which relates to the maintenance of Professional Competence will require the development of Professional Competence Schemes in Ireland.

The Medical Council, through the work of the Professional Competence Schemes Working Group, are in the process of developing such Schemes which will enable doctors to maintain and demonstrate their professional competence. These schemes will be delivered through approved Postgraduate Training Bodies bodies, with which the Council has an arrangement for these purposes.
