Professional Practice Review - PPR
The Medical Council piloted a multi-source feedback study of general practitioners, entitled the Professional Practice Review, as part of the development of professional competence schemes for doctors. Part of delivering quality care means looking for feedback from the people doctors work with and their patients. The overall aim of the study was to promote quality improvement in individual medical practices and to foster a culture of continuous quality assurance and improvement in the profession. The pilot study was undertaken in order to gauge the effectiveness of Multi Source Feedback (MSF) in an Irish context and secondly to examine the trends of the reports and look at feedback from doctors in a formative way.
The pilot project involved General Practitioners completing a Self-Assessment Questionnaire and also asking their patients, co-workers and medical colleagues to fill out a questionnaire about their practice. Examples of these questionnaires can be found in additional information below.
The questionnaires focused on areas such as:
- Personality and attitudes
- Communication skills
- The surgery and staff
- The level of care
Following the completion of the Professional Practice Review pilot project, a Report on the findings and recommendations entitled Professional Practice Review - Developing Standards 2008 was presented to the Medical Council. This report can be found in additional information below.
The pilot project provided the Medical Council with invaluable insight into how Professional Competence Schemes such as Professional Practice Review can be developed and implemented throughout the country to become an integral part of modern medical practice. As this pilot project focussed on the area of general practice only, it is hoped that a similar project will be rolled out in the near future for those doctors working in hospital-based specialties.
The Medical Council would like to thank all of the General Practitioners who participated in the pilot project, and the patients and colleagues who completed questionnaires.
