Fitness to Practise Committee - Year in Review - 2009

During the course of 2009 inquiries were heard in accordance with the provisions of both Part V of the Medical Practitioners Act, 1978 and Part 8 of the Medical Practitioners Act, 2007. The respective Fitness to Practise Committee under each of the Act's heard in total 28 cases over 42 hearing days between them.

Following the conclusion of the evidence and having heard submissions in respect of the matter the Committee prepared a Report setting out its findings and reasons for such findings for submission to the Medical Council for consideration as to what sanction if any was to be imposed.

The Council imposed sanction arising from inquiries in relation to fifteen cases, five cases under the Medical Practitioners Act, 1978 and ten cases under the Medical Practitioners Act, 2007.

The Fitness to Practise Committee established under the 1978 Act, although having officially left office when the new Act and new Fitness to Practise Committee was established, will conclude their business within 2010 with the hearing of the three outstanding cases.
