Frequently Asked Questions

What division of the Register is most appropriate for me?

You can check your current registration status by clicking here.

You will need your registration number, which is printed on your current Certificate of Registration.  If you are registered in the Specialist Division, you do not need to apply to transfer to another Division.  However, you must ensure that you complete the annual retention application form and pay your annual retention fee.

If you are practising and/or due to commence practise in a training post, you should ensure that you are registered in the Trainee Specialist Division for your next training post, due to commence shortly.

If your training post is due to expire and you will not be taking up another training post, you will be automatically transferred to the General Division.

If you have not completed specialist training and are not practising in a training post, you can remain on the General Division.  Again, you must ensure that you complete the annual retention application form and pay your annual retention fee.

I am registered in the Trainee Specialist Division. What type of locum or other cover can I provide?

Medical practitioners who are registered in the Trainee Specialist Division of the Register are normally registered on a postgraduate training programme with an approved postgraduate training body. In these circumstances, they are restricted to practising within the terms and conditions of their training post. Your employer will advise you about providing cross cover for other NCHDs. In accordance with section 48 of the Medical Practitioners Act 2007, the Medical Council is obliged to register all medical practitioners who practise in training posts in the Trainee Specialist Division of the Register. The Act is quite specific in this regard and does not provide for doctors to practise outside of these posts while registered in the Trainee Specialist Division.

The Medical Council's current Guide to the Application Procedure and Registration Rules outlines the current limitations of trainee specialist registration and can be downloaded below;
