Internship Registration

Internship Registration allows a doctor to carry out internship training in a hospital recognised by the Medical Council. Internship registration is open to both graduates of Irish and EU member State Medical Schools. Graduates of one of the six medical schools in Ireland and graduates of recognised medical schools within EU member states are entitled to apply for Internship Registration.

Application procedure for graduates of medical school in Ireland

To apply for Internship Registration, you will need to complete the IR1 Form and submit the current appropriate fee. If you apply to the HSE for an intern training post, the application form will be sent to the email address provided to the HSE on your application. (However, registration with the Medical Council is a separate process to the application for your intern post.) The application form should be returned to:

Internship Registration
Medical Council
Kingram House
Kingram Place
Dublin 2

The appropriate fee must be returned with the application form and should be paid by Cheque/Bank Draft/Postal Order/Credit Card. You can insert your credit card details at the bottom of the application form.

On conferring day, the Council will receive from your university a list of those who have been conferred with Medical Degrees. Provided that your application form is in order and that the fee has been received, you will be granted internship registration once the list of graduates is received from your university. A Certificate of Internship Registration will then be posted to the address which you enter in the application form, which will be your registered address. All future correspondence from the Council will be sent to your registered address. [You can change your registered address as often as required and can do so online from this website.] Graduates should contact the Dean of their medical school regarding obtaining an internship, as the Medical Council cannot arrange this for you, however, you must ensure that you hold the appropriate type of registration before you commence your internship.

Application procedure for graduates of a medical school in an EU member state, excluding Ireland

Although graduates of medical schools in the EU/EEA/Switzerland who intend practising in recognised intern training posts in Ireland can apply for internship registration, it is worth noting that the HSE will not consider applications for intern training posts from graduates (of whatever nationality) from Medical Schools in the following countries:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Spain, France, Cyprus, Iceland, Latvia, Hungary, Netherlands, Romania, Slovenia, Switzerland and the Slovak Republic.
This is because these graduates are deemed, under EU legislation, to have already completed their medical training to a standard equivalent to that of a graduate of an Irish medical school who has already completed internship training and has been awarded a Certificate of Experience.

Note: Applicants for internship registration should make enquiries about job opportunities for interns in Ireland before applying for internship registration.
