Trainee Specialist or General to Specialist Division

Entry into Specialist Division

Specialist registration is specifically for doctors who have completed specialist training recognised by the Medical Council.

• Completed a specialist training programme in Ireland

• Completed a specialist training programme elsewhere in the European Union/ European Economic Area

Doctors who completed a structured higher specialist training programme; or hold 'Acquired Rights'; or trained in a third country and are formally recognised as a specialist, in another EU Member State

• Evaluation of existing training and experience

Doctors who are applying to have their existing training experience assessed by the Medical Council. This applies to doctors who:

1. Have completed specialist training and obtained specialised experience in Non-European Union/ European Economic Area countries, and;
2. Whose existing training and experience obtained in an European Union/ European Economic Area member state does not currently qualify them for automatic recognition.
