A Tribute to Mr Harold Browne

It was with great sadness that we learned of our former colleague, Mr. Harold Browne’s passing on the 5th of January this year. Mr. Browne was a highly regarded surgeon within the Irish medical profession, who transformed the landscape of general surgery.

He began his career in UCD, where he graduated top of his class and then after graduation took a position in Richmond Hospital. From there, he accepted a fellowship to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, regarded as one of the best surgical hospitals in the world.

Mr. Browne received many accolades and achievements throughout his career. He dedicated his life to his profession becoming an advocate for higher standards in surgical practice when he began lecturing in the RCSI, a position he held for an impressive 60 years.

In 1984, he was elected to the Medical Council becoming Chairman of the Fitness of Practise Committee and thereafter was chosen by his fellow members as President of the Council.

The Medical Council would like to express our deepest condolences to Mr. Browne’s family, friends and colleagues. We truly lost a medical visionary whose legacy will live on for many years to come.
