Notice of Election of Registered Medical Practitioners for Appointment to Medical Council

Specialist Division in relation to pathology or radiology

Friday, 23rd February 2018: Further to the public advertisement published on the 19th January 2018, further notice is hereby given that, in accordance with the provisions of section 17(1) and (8) of the Medical Practitioners Act 2007, an election is about to be held.

The Returning Officer having received no nominations in this category, hereby extends the deadline for receipt of nominations from any medical practitioner practising medicine in the State, registered or able to be registered in the category of the Specialist Division in relation to pathology or radiology, to 1pm Wednesday 28th February 2018.

The Returning Officer hereby requests nominations from any registered medical practitioner practising medicine in the State, registered or able to be registered, in the Specialist Division in relation to pathology or radiology, who may wish to stand for election for appointment to the Medical Council.

The Medical Council is the regulatory body for doctors. It has a statutory role in protecting the public by promoting the highest professional standards amongst doctors practicing in the Republic of Ireland. The Council has a majority of non-medical members. The 25 member Council consists of 13 non-medical members and 12 medical members.

Nominations for the other categories for election have closed and nominated candidates can be viewed on the Medical Council website.

To be eligible for election a person must be a registered medical practitioner practising medicine in the State (but excluding any visiting EEA practitioner) on 27th February 2018, this being the day preceding the extended last day for receiving nominations. Nomination of a candidate shall be subscribed by 10 other registered medical practitioners.

Nomination papers and other information regarding the election are available by request from the Medical Council, or may be obtained from the Medical Council website at www.medicalcouncil.ie/elections.

Nomination papers should be returned to the Returning Officer, Offices of the Medical Council, Kingram House, Kingram Place, Dublin 2, D02 XY88. The extended closing date for receipt of nomination papers in this category is Wednesday, 28th February 2018 at 1.00pm.

If there is more than one nominated candidate an electronic poll shall be taken, the period during which votes may be received by the Returning Officer will commence at 12 noon on Thursday 1st March and close at 12 noon on Wednesday 21st March 2018.
