Reporting of Professional Indemnity

All registered doctors who will be seeking to retain their registration in the middle of this year will be required to provide a declaration that they have appropriate professional indemnity cover in place.

This new requirement came into effect when the Oireachtas passed an amendment to the Medical Practitioners Act requiring doctors to confirm they have the appropriate level of professional indemnity in place.

For many doctors, the requirement will simply be completing a declaration, as you will be covered by indemnity arrangements with your employer.

Full details of what will be required will be advised to all of the profession closer to the period where registration is retained.

Shortly you will receive advice from the Council as part of the public consultation process on the rules which will establish the administrative arrangements to support this legislative change. Until the public consultation and the final version of the rules is ratified by Council, we are unable to provide precise details of the requirements for each doctor. As such, we would ask doctors to hold off making enquiries about professional indemnity, as these may need to be adjusted following the public consultation process on the rules.

We appreciate your assistance. There is some preliminary advice available on the Council’s website here
