Standards & Guidelines for Medical Education & Training

Undergraduate standards and guidelines

The requirements under the Medical Practitioners Act 2007 for Council to:

  • set the standards of medical education and training for basic medical qualifications - 88(1)(a),
  • prepare guidelines on curriculum issues and content - (88)(2)(b) and
  • prepare standards required for the award of a basic medical qualification - (88)(2)(c)

have been met by Council's adoption (on 9th September 2010) of the World Federation for Medical Education's (WFME) Standards in Basic Medical Education as per their 'Global Standards for Quality Improvement in Medical Education: European Specification'.

Intern standards and guidelines

Under the Medical Practitioners Act 2007, Council has produced the following:

Specialist standards and guidelines

  1. The requirement under the Act for Council to set and publish the standards of medical education and training for specialist medical qualifications (88)(1)(a) have been met by Council's adoption (on 9th September 2010) of the 'Medical Council Accreditation Standards for Postgraduate Medical Education and Training' as approved by Council at its meeting in June 2010.
  2. The requirement under the Act for Council to prepare and publish guidelines on specialist medical education and training (88)(4)(b) have been met by Council's adoption (on on 9th September 2010) of the 'Medical Council Accreditation Standards for Postgraduate Medical Education and Training' as approved by Council at its meeting in June 2010.
  3. The requirement under the Act for Council to specify and publish standards for training and experience required for the granting of a specialist medical qualification (88)(4)(d) have been met by Council's adoption (on 9th September 2010) that Council's standards should be those standards applied by a body approved under section (89)(3)(a)(ii) to award a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST).
