Professional Indemnity Information

BEFORE MAKING AN APPLICATION FOR REGISTRATION YOU NEED TO BE AWARE OF NEW REQUIREMENTS FOR PROFESSIONAL INDEMNITY ARRANGMENTS.

When making an application for Registration, you will be sent a Professional Indemnity Declaration Form (PIDF), where you will need to advise the Medical Council of your proposed practice arrangements. You can also download the form here. Set out below are the six different practice arrangement options. In completing the PIDF, you will be required to complete a Declaration. Specific additional evidence may also be required – this will be set out in the form.

The following six practice arrangements are as they will appear on the PIDF. Please familiarise yourself with these before applying for Registration.

A. If registered, will you be engaged in the practise of medicine exclusively in a hospital and/or healthcare facility that is managed by the Health Service Executive – a full listing of these hospitals will be provided on the PIDF.

If you choose this option, you will need to complete the PIDF only.

B. If registered, will you be engaged in whole or in part (including on a locum basis), in the practise of medicine as a consultant in a private hospital and/or healthcare facility – a full listing of these hospitals will be provided on the PIDF.

If you choose this option, you will need to complete the PIDF, and be required to provide evidence of the relevant minimum level of indemnity by way of certificate from your insurer/broker or indemnity provider.

C. If registered, will you be engaged in whole or in part (including on a locum basis), in the practise of medicine in a non-consultant position, in a hospital and/or healthcare facility – a full listing of these facilities will be provided on the PIDF.

If you choose this option, you will need to complete the PIDF only.

D. If registered, will you be engaged, in whole or in part (including on a locum basis), in the practise of medicine other in a facility that is not listed in the PIDF.

If you choose this option, you will need to complete the PIDF, and be required to provide evidence of the relevant minimum level of indemnity by way of certificate from your insurer/broker or indemnity provider.

E. If registered, I will not immediately be engaged in the practise of medicine under a contract of employment, contract for services or any other arrangement. However, I hope to engage in the practise of medicine during this period of registration.

If you choose this option, you will need to complete the PIDF only.

F. I will not be engaged in the practise of medicine.

If you choose this option, you will need to complete the PIDF only.
