Medical Council launches Public Consultation on Rules for the Fitness to Practise Committee and Subcommittees of the Fitness to Practise Committee

Friday, 12th June 2020: The Medical Council has today launched a public consultation on draft rules relating to the operating of the Council’s Fitness to Practise Committee and Subcommittees of the Fitness to Practise Committee.

In accordance with Section 11 of the Medical Practitioners Act 2007, the Medical Council has launched a public consultation on the draft Rules for the Fitness to Practise Committee and Subcommittees of the Fitness to Practise Committee (the "Rules").

Mr William Kennedy, Director of Regulation and Legal Advisor to the Medical Council, said “We would like to invite our stakeholders and members of the public to participate in this public consultation on these draft rules.”

“These rules simply take the Medical Council’s Fitness to Practise procedures, with some very minor amendments, and transposes them into rules in accordance with the Act,” concluded Mr Kennedy.

In accordance with the Medical Practitioners Act 2007 (the Act), the Medical Council from time to time, and as required, can create or amend rules for the purposes of the better operation of any provision of the Act. Section 11 of the Act outlines how these rules are to be created and part of that process includes a public consultation.

In the event that the Medical Council proceeds to make Rules pursuant to section 11 of the Act, the Medical Council will arrange for the Rules to be published and submitted to the Minister for laying before the Houses of the Oireachtas in accordance with the requirements of section 11 of the Act.
