Search for a Registered Doctor

You can check here to verify that a doctor is registered to practise medicine in Ireland, and you can also check a doctor's qualifications through this facility. By law all doctors have to register with the Medical Council in order to practise, and doctors can only practise independently as specialists if they have specialist registration.

You can search by last name, first name, or registration number. If a doctor has more than one surname (or forenames) the full name is required for search results to appear. As doctors may be registered under a different name (e.g. a married name) or spelling (e.g. McCarthy, MacCarthy, Mac Cárthaigh) a record may sometimes not be found. However, a doctor whose details are not found by this search method may still be registered.

The best way to find a doctor’s record is to insert the doctor's registration number in the box below. You can often find a doctors Medical Council registration number on letters from a doctor, referrals and on prescriptions. It may also be available on hospital staff listings or clinic websites. If you are searching a doctor’s record, it is important that you access the full record by clicking on the doctor’s registration number (see diagram below) in order to see all relevant information concerning a doctor’s registration status.



Please note: if you do not click on the doctor’s registration number, there is a risk that you may miss some important information about a doctor’s registration status, as there may be cases in which certain restrictions are in place on a doctor’s practice.

Restrictions may include: undertakings given by a doctor not to practise medicine, conditions placed on a doctor’s registration or suspension from the Register.

Please also note: Details of a doctor’s suspension may take different forms, and such details may be included in the doctor’s full record (this is why it is very important that you access the full record by clicking on the doctor’s registration number).
