Current Registration Processing Times Updated

This registration route is for doctors who have qualified outside of the EU/EEA and are applying for General Registration through the Certificate of Experience (COE) Route. Doctors with general registration may practise independently without supervision but may not represent themselves as being specialists. The current registration processing time for this route is 51-53 weeks*. Please note: Applications received in May 2023 are currently being assessed. This registration route is for doctors who have qualified outside of the EU/EEA and are applying for General Registration through the Higher Qualification (HQ) Route. Doctors with general registration may practise independently without supervision but may not represent themselves as being specialists.

This registration route is for doctors who have qualified outside of the EU/EEA and are applying for General Registration through the Pre-Registration Exam System (PRES) Route. Doctors with general registration may practise independently without supervision but may not represent themselves as being specialists.

*Please note that you are required to submit a Genform and payment of the registration fee after you have passed the PRES exams.

Registration in the supervised division is granted to doctors who have been offered a post that has been approved by the national Health Service Executive (HSE), which has specific supervisory arrangements. Before you apply for registration with the Medical Council, the HSE should advise whether supervised registration is required.

When an applicant is not eligible to apply under the other Categories for Specialist Registration they may instead apply to have their application assessed by a recognised Training Body. The Training Body will then advise the Medical Council on the applicant's eligibility for specialist registration.
