Medical Council’s Fit and Proper Policy
As part of the process for applying for registration, the Medical Council requires applicants to provide answers to a series of mandatory questions relating to their health, character, and competence, in order to assess the applicant’s ability to practise medicine safely. It is important that applicants provide full and accurate information to these questions.
The answers provided to these questions may prompt the assessment team to seek further information about any matters disclosed. Failure to provide full information at the time of application that subsequently comes to light may result in a registered doctor being removed from the Register.
Disclosures will be considered by the registration assessment team and some disclosures will progress for consideration to the Registration Applications Committee to ensure that having considered the disclosures, the applicant is considered fit and proper to be entered on the Register of Medical Practitioners.
This ensures that individuals granted registration are fit and proper to practise medicine and that appropriate safeguards are in place, where necessary, when risks have been identified.
