Medical Council Elections

Following the close of the Medical Council election process on Thursday 26th February 2026 at 12 noon, the independent Returning Officer, Dublin County Sheriff Mr Fergus Gallagher has announced the results of the elections.

In total, 8 candidates contested three positions in three categories in the election. The newly appointed Council members will begin their term on 1st June 2026.

All registered medical practitioners (as at 12 noon on 23rd January 2026) were entitled to vote electronically in the Medical Council Elections via a link which was communicated to you via email on February 6th. This email was sent to the current email address we had in your Medical Council record (by the cut-off date set out above).

The voting process is overseen by Mr Fergus Gallagher, Dublin County Sheriff, the appointed independent returning officer.

All doctors were encouraged to make sure they had their say in the formation of the next Medical Council by voting. Formal results will be declared after the election voting period concludes.

Notice of Election of Registered Medical Practitioner for Appointment to the Medical Council

The Council consists of 25 members, 6 of whom are elected by medical practitioners registered with the Medical Council, and subsequently appointed by the Minister for Health in accordance with the provisions of section 17(1)(f) of the Medical Practitioners Act 2007, as amended (the “Act”).

The current term of office of one of the directly elected members of the Medical Council is due to expire on 31st May 2026. This position, along with two existing vacancies on the Medical Council, are subject to an election process in accordance with the Medical Council’s election regulations.

Notice is hereby given that, in accordance with the provisions of section 17(1) and (8) of the Act and the relevant Regulations made under section 18(1) of the Act, an election is about to be held.

Categories for Election

Following the close of the nominations period (12 noon on 14th January 2026), the independent returning officer, Mr Fergus Gallagher, announced the candidates eligible for election to the Medical Council in the following categories:

• One medical practitioner registered or able to be registered- in the Specialist Division in relation to Anaesthesia. Click here to view all candidates nominated for election in this category.
• One medical practitioner registered or able to be registered in the Specialist Division in relation to Public Health Medicine. Click here to view all candidates nominated for election in this category.
• One medical practitioner registered or able to be registered- in the Specialist Division in relation to Pathology or Radiology. One candidate has been nominated, Prof John Conor O’Keane, Registration Number: 008071, and as a result, this category will be filled in accordance with election regulations. To be eligible for election a medical practitioner must be registered on the Specialist Division and practising medicine in the State (but excluding any visiting EEA practitioner) on the day preceding the last day for receiving nominations (13th January 2026) and must be in one in of three categories which were set out during the nomination period.

Additionally, a registered medical practitioner must be nominated by 10 registered medical practitioners practising medicine in the State and meet the eligibility requirements set out in the election regulations.

• Voting commenced at 12 noon on 6th February, 2026.
• Voting closed at 12 noon on 26th February, 2026.
• All registered medical practitioners (as at 12 noon, on 23rd January, 2026) were entitled to vote electronically in the election.
• To vote in the Medical Council Elections from 6th February 2026, a link was sent by email to the current email address we had in your Medical Council record (by the cut-off date set out above). You will follow the link to cast your vote.
• It was the responsibility of all doctors to ensure that their contact information was up to date (by the cut-off date set out above) to guarantee receipt of the voting link email.
• The voting process is overseen by an independent returning officer.
• The newly appointed Council members will begin their term on June 1st 2026.
