Reductions in Annual Retention Fees

The Medical Council has introduced a number of reductions in annual retention fees in order to support doctors and their families. A reduction of 50% of the annual retention fee will apply for doctors on any of the following types of leave:

• Maternity Leave
• Adoptive Leave
• Extended Sick Leave
• Surrogacy Leave

One reduction of 50% of the fee applies to a single period of any leave type, so if your leave overlaps two retention periods, the refund will be issued based on the fee paid in the current registration year.

Maternity Leave

To be eligible for a refund, you must be/have been on maternity leave during the current registration year and have paid the annual retention fee in full. Refunds can only be granted for the current registration year.

One reduction of 50% of the fee applies to a single period of any leave type, so if your leave overlaps two retention periods, the refund will be issued based on the fee paid in the current registration year

Applying for a refund

To apply for a refund, please submit the following:

• Completed refund form which is available here.
• Please email the completed refund request form in Word format    
• A letter from your doctor confirming the start and end dates of your maternity leave or certificate/letter from the Department of Social Protection.

Adoptive Leave

To be eligible for a refund, you must be/have been on adoptive leave during the current registration year and have paid the annual retention fee in full. 

Applying for a refund

To apply for a refund, please submit the following:

• Completed refund form which is available here.
• Please email the completed refund request form in Word format  
• A letter from your employer confirming you are on adoptive leave or a certificate/letter from the Department of Social Protection confirming you are on adoptive leave.

Surrogacy Leave

To be eligible for a refund, you must be/have been on surrogacy leave during the current registration year and have paid the annual retention fee in full.

Applying for a refund

To apply for a refund, please submit the following:

• Completed refund form which is available here.
• Please email the completed refund request form in Word format  
• A letter from your employer confirming you are on surrogacy leave or if you are self employed, a signed declaration confirming you are on surrogacy leave and the dates for the leave.

Extended Sick Leave

To be eligible for a refund, you must be/have been on sick leave for more than 6 months during the current registration year and have paid the annual retention fee in full.

One reduction of 50% of the fee applies to a single period of any leave type, so if your leave overlaps two retention periods, the refund will be issued based on the current registration year.

Applying for a refund

To apply for a refund, please submit the following:

• Completed refund form which is available here.
• Please email the completed refund request form in Word format  
• A letter from your doctor confirming you are on sick leave and the dates Or a certificate/letter from the Department of Social Protection confirming you are on sick leave.
